Lanes Reopen After Tractor-Trailer Catches Fire on Stevenson Expressway

The outbound lanes of Interstate 55 -- the Stevenson Expressway -- were closed for several hours near Kedzie Avenue late Wednesday after a tractor-trailer caught fire.

An Illinois State Police official told NBC Chicago the fire started at about 11 p.m. and that some diesel fuel had leaked.

Traffic was backed up on the outbound lanes due to the road closure.

Fire officials pumped out the tanks of the trailer and removed what was left of the semi. Chicago Fire Media Affairs said the truck was loaded with appliances.

Officials said the lanes were reopening shortly after 2 a.m. No injuries were reported.
