Bicyclist Killed in Collision With Van in Roselle

Officials said driver of van was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol

A bicyclist was killed after a collision with a van in Roselle, northwest of Chicago, on Tuesday morning.

The 2004 Mercedes Benz minivan was eastbound on Rosemont Avenue and struck the bicyclist while turning left onto Roselle Road at 6:09 a.m., Roselle police Sgt. John Lawson said.

The cyclist, 47-year-old Efrain Diaz-Torres of Roselle, was taken to Alexian Brothers Medical Center, where he died of his injuies.

An autopsy Wednesday found Diaz-Torres died of multiple injuries from a van striking his bicycle and his death was ruled an accident, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

"At this time it appears alcohol and or drugs did not play a part in this tragic crash," Lawson said.

Roselle Road between East Devon and East Granville avenues was closed to traffic at about 6:45 a.m. so emergency crews could investigate and clean up.

The driver of the minivan, a 63-year-old Roselle man, was not cited or charged as of Wednesday afternoon and the crash remained under investigation.
