A water main break in West Town forced the closure of the Grand station on the Chicago Transit Authority's Blue Line for several hours on Monday night.
The water main break occurred in the 400 block of North Halsted Street at about 7 p.m., flooding streets and flooding a parking garage below a condo building and damaging cars.
"We're devastated because we just got a new car," Ellie O'Sullivan said.
The CTA kept trains running, but trains were not stopping in either direction at Grand. The station was reopened shortly after 10 p.m.
Ben Bartz saw the water flowing down Grand Avenue and knew it wasn't a good sign.
"I was driving down Halsted after work and just kind of saw water rushing out of the ground, turned the corner and saw it pouring down the street and just thought, 'Oh no, please don't tell me,'" Bartz said.
Chicago Water Department officials believe the sudden warm-up may be responsible for the rupture in the old cast iron pipes.
Officials reopened Halsted to traffic shortly after 6 a.m. Tuesday.
