Red, Brown, Purple Line Service Resumes After Trains Halted at Belmont Due to Person Struck

A male was hit by a train at 7:51 a.m. at the station

CTA Red, Brown and Purple Line trains were experiencing major delays Monday morning after a person was fatally struck by a train at the Belmont station in the North Side Lake View neighborhood.

A male was hit by a train at 7:51 a.m. at the station, 945 W. Belmont Ave., according to Chicago police. He was dead at the scene.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office has not released details about the death.

Trains on all three lines were standing shortly before 8 a.m. because of a “medical emergency on the tracks,” according to service alerts from the CTA. The transit agency later said there was "a collision between a train and a person."

There was no Red Line service between Addison and Fullerton in either direction, no Brown Line service between Southport and Fullerton and no Purple Line service between Howard and Fullerton.

The transit agency was recommending riders find alternate routes, including Lake Shore Drive express buses, other bus routes or other rail lines.

Just before 9 a.m., trains began resuming service, but the CTA said riders should still expect major delays. Trains were also bypassing Belmont as police and fire investigated the incident.

"If you are not already on a train, consider alternate service," the agency tweeted.
