Storms Cause Damage, Flight Cancellations & Delays

The Chicago area's warm, sunny Friday was interrupted by damaging storms.

Both of Chicago's airports were reporting delays and cancellations Friday night after a line of strong thunderstorms raked the area.

A Chicago Department of Aviation spokesperson said there were 145 cancellations at O'Hare International Airport reported as of 9 p.m. Other flights were delayed, on average, about 90 minutes. Midway International Airport had a "handful" of cancellations. Delays were averaging an hour or more.

Those traveling should check with their airlines for up-to-date flight information.

The storms brought heavy rain and incredible lightning, with damage reported to the west of the city. Areas in the northwest suburbs were dealing with flooding. In Woodridge, a condo building caught fire after being struck by lightning.

Forecast models generated late Friday showed the rain moving out of the area by early Saturday morning. The models indicated that most of the day Saturday would be dry before more rain entered the picture by around 10 p.m.

Mother's Day looks mainly cloudy with occasional showers and a few storms possible late.

Monday has the potential to bring severe storms as another cold front crosses the area.  High temperatures in the low- to mid-60s are possible.
