Prisoner Buses Crash on I-55

Two Cook County Sheriff’s buses transporting prisoners collided Friday morning

Two prisoner buses crashed Friday morning on the Stevenson expressway, injuring two and clogging the morning commute.

Three Cook County Sheriff’s buses were transporting prisoners to Stateville Prison when two collided around 8 a.m. on the outbound I-55 at Pulaski. Dozens of police responded, shutting down the two left outbound lanes and one inbound lane.

Prisoners were claiming injuries, according to authorities, but only one officer and one detainee were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, suffering minor injuries.

The other 105 detainees were taken back to Cook County Jail and checked for injuries. Afterward they will head to Stateville prison.

The buses were since removed from the expressway.
