President Barack Obama arrived in Chicago Thursday ahead of a scheduled appearance at the University of Chicago Law School, where he is expected to discuss his Supreme Court nominee, Merrick Garland, with students and faculty.
Obama arrived at O’Hare Airport just after 1 p.m. and left the airport in his motorcade around 1:20 p.m. to make his way to the university.
He is scheduled to speak at the school at 2:30 p.m. and will return to O’hare Airport to fly to California after the event.
Obama is slated to depart Chicago just before 5:30 p.m., which means commuters should be prepared for road closures heading into the afternoon rush hour, should he motorcade back to O'Hare.
There are a number of potential routes the motorcade could take from the university to the airport Thursday.
One option is to take Interstate 90 West/I-94 West from East 55th Street and East Garfield Boulevard or to take the Stevenson Expressway and I-294 North to I-190 West. He could also take South Lake Shore Drive to I-55 South to I-90 West to I-190 West.
He could also take his helicopter from near Soldier Field, though the weather could be a problem if rainy and wet conditions persist.

It was not immediately clear which route the president would take on his return to the airport, but any potential closures could mean difficult travel conditions for late afternoon and evening commuters.
