O’Hare Airport is about to get a multi-million dollar upgrade, officials announced Monday.

The $65 million investment was unveiled by the U.S. Transportation Secretary, who said the funds would in part be used to build new runways at the world’s fourth-busiest airport.

“These construction of runways will help Chicago maintain its status as one of the busiest in the world,” FAA Assistant Administrator Bailey Edwards said.

The FAA said construction is expected to start soon.

“We don’t wait around as it relates to putting money to work,” Edwards said. “When it comes to investing in infrastructure, we will get these dollars to the airport as quickly as possible.”

Midway Airport will also see $276,000 to help measure noise levels and the impact on nearby neighborhoods, officials said.

Chicago’s airports are two of 327 airports getting federal money for improvements.

The Chicago Department of Aviation did not respond to requests for comment on how the money would be spent.
