Freezing rain and slick roads hampered Thursday morning's commute, causing between 30 and 40 crashes in the Chicago area.
Multiple spinouts were reported throughout the northwest suburbs, and police agencies warned of "very icy conditions." In Bolingbrook, black ice caused a chain reaction of crashes involving a semi-tractor trailer and six other vehicles. In a separate incident on I-355 over I-55, a pick-up truck hit a wall.
"Use caution on all area roadways due to freezing rain and possible icy conditions," Lake County officials warned. County officials reported numerous accidents and urged commuters to take extra time.
In South Elgin, a head-on crash was reported near Route 31 and Stearns Road. Crashes also were reported at Algonquin and Roselle in Palatine, Lagrange Road and I-55 in Hodgkins, and Buckley Road over Route 45 in Mundelein.
Westbound Route 120 was closed for a crash in Volo, and Golf Road was closed between Barrington and Route 59 for an accident with injuries.
The wintry mix of snow is expected to move quickly through the area, giving way to 40-degree highs and sun.
