A deadly shooting near the Eisenhower Expressway caused big back-ups for the early morning commute from the western suburbs.
Chicago police told NBC Chicago a vehicle was fired on around 4:40 a.m. at a BP gas station on the 5200 block of West Jackson near Laramie.
The victim got into a dispute at another gas station before coming to the BP where shots were fired, police said. The 28-year-old man tried driving himself to the hospital but got less than a mile away from the scene. His van ended up on the Ike near the Keeler on-ramp, police said.
The man was found severely injured inside the vehicle and taken by ambulance to Mount Sinai Hospital and pronounced dead just after 5 a.m.
His family said they're looking for answers but have received few as the investigation continues.
"He's a family man," said George Bady, the victim's uncle. "He's got a daughter, he spent a lot of time with his kids."
"The key thing for me is to stay focused and keep it in God's hands," Bady said.
Because of the ensuing police investigation, two lanes of the inbound side were shut down for more than two hours. Just before 6:15 a.m., all lanes were re-opened.
