Fatal Crash Temporarily Shuts Down Northbound I-55 in Plainfield

A Joliet man was killed when a tractor-trailer collided with a vehicle Wednesday afternoon near southwest suburban Plainfield, shutting down part of Interstate 55 for roughly four hours.

A Freightliner semi was traveling northbound on the expressway just north of Lockport/Plainfield Road about 4:26 p.m. when it hit a Chrysler that was disabled in the roadway, State Police said.

The driver of the Chrysler, later identified as 47-year-old Eric Sharpe, was dead at the scene, police said.

The semi driver was taken to a hospital for treatment, police said.

All northbound lanes were shut down for hours as crews investigated. All lanes have since reopened as of 8:30 p.m., police said.
