City Plans New Bike Sharing Program

Get ready to divvy up your Chicago commute.

The city plans to roll out a new bike sharing program this June, with an aim toward Metra and CTA riders who need a little extra mobility to get to their final destination.

Officials with the city want to alleviated the burden on taxis and help clip the number of drivers on the roadways.

The first kiosks for www.divvybikes.com, as the program has been named, will go in near Union Station, Ogilvie Transportation Center and various downtown CTA stations. The kiosks will run on solar power.

Divvy bikes will be administerd Alta Bicycle Share, which is based in Portland, Ore. Mayor Rahm Emanuel said the city plans to sell sponsorships for the program in the future. For now, it will be branded Divvy and splashed with Chicago blue.

The bikes themselves will be three-speed cruisers, with chain guards so as to not mess up your pants; headlight and taillight and a basket.

Helmets will not be offered.
