Chicago-Bound Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Ireland

Chicago-bound flight landed at Shannon Airport after departing Manchester

A mechanical problem forced a Chicago-bound American Airlines flight from England to make an emergency landing Friday in Ireland, officials told NBC News.

Flight 55 from Manchester was diverted after departure and landed at Shannon Airport, Niall Maloney Airport Operations Manager Shannon Airport said.

NBC News reported the crew saw a warning light in the cockpit.

American Airlines spokeswoman Mary Frances Fagan told NBCChicago the plane, a 767-300, was carrying 199 passengers and 12 crew members who all deplaned safely at 1 p.m. local time.

"A maintenance team is evaluating the aircraft and it is scheduled to re-depart at 3:15 p.m. local time," Fagan said.
