A mother and her 6-year-old child were killed in a multiple car crash that shutdown the southbound lanes of Lake Shore Drive Saturday night.
In the 4400 block of North Lake Shore Drive around 6:06 p.m., a vehicle traveling northbound lost control and crossed the median into the southbound lanes where it struck another vehicle, according to police news affairs.
The mother and child in the car traveling northbound were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, news affairs said.
One driver, whose car was rear-ended, was taken to Weiss Memorial Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and released, authorities said.
Another victim from a third vehicle was taken to Illinois Masonic with unspecificed injuries.
The southbound lanes of Lake Shore Drive were still shut down between Hollywood Avenue and Montrose Avenue at 9 p.m. Saturday evening.
The police Major Accidents Investigation Unit is investigating, police said.
