2 Dead in Small Plane Crash in Gary: Report

The single-engine plane crashed around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday

Another person has been reported killed in a small plane crash late Wednesday in Gary, Ind.

The pilot of the plane and other man died in the crash, police told the Chicago Tribune.

The single-engine plane crashed around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at 7th Street and Clark Road, near West Gary Lighthouse Charter School and about a mile from Gary/Chicago International Airport.

"We were very fortunate that none of the children or any of the attendees at the community center were in danger at any time," said Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson.

The plane took off from Smyrna, Tenn., at 9:25 a.m. and was supposed to land in Gary at 11:19 a.m. but never made it.

There were no survivors, officials said. It was not known Wednesday if the pilot was traveling with anyone. The identities of the men haven't been released.

Gary police spokesman Cpt. Gabrielle King told the Associated Press the scene was "chaotic" but had no other immediate details about the crash.
