Fare Warning: Cabbies Strike

Drivers in midst of 24 hour strike

Cab drivers made good on their promise of a 24-hour strike Sunday because of frustration over fares.

They're asking for a 16 percent fare increase citing difficult economic conditions.

Earlier this month, a fuel surcharge was eliminated after the price of gas fell.

A spokesman for United Taxidrivers Community Council said they've told city officials that the fuel surcharge is not the issue.

He said drivers need a more reliable means of income and the 16 percent increase is for increased cost of living.

The drivers said a strike could paralyze the city.
