Lake Shore Drive to Close Overnight for S-Curve Resurfacing

Lake Shore Drive will be closed to traffic in either direction four nights this week for resurfacing of the S-curve.

Lanes of the drive will close between 8:15 p.m. and 5:45 a.m. for two nights in the northbound direction and two nights in the southbound direction, according to the Chicago Department of Transportation.

On Monday and Tuesday, northbound traffic will be detoured off Lake Shore at Randolph, westbound to Michigan Avenue, and then northbound onto Lake Shore via the entrance ramp at Oak Street. Ramps from Randolph, Wacker and Grand to northbound Lake Shore will be closed. Local access only will be maintained to the Grand Avenue ramp and Navy Pier. Southbound Lake Shore will remain open.

Next Wednesday and Thursday, southbound Lake Shore traffic will be detoured off at Michigan Avenue. The detour route is south on Michigan to Randolph and east on Randolph back to southbound Lake Shore. The exit ramp at Chestnut will be closed. Chicago Avenue access to and from Lake Shore will remain open. Northbound Lake Shore will remain open.

Drivers are advised to avoid Lake Shore unless absolutely necessary on the nights full closures are in effect. CDOT advises drivers to take I-90/94, the Dan Ryan and the Kennedy as alternatives.

The closures will be in effect for resurfacing of the sections north and south of the Oak Street S-curve.

Drivers can also expect periodic lane closures between North and Grand between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. over the next few weeks for restriping, curb, shoulder and other repairs that cannot be done at night.
