Arson Suspected in Fire That Killed Mother, Son

Officials in Arlington Heights suspect arson in a fire that left an 11-year-old boy and his mother dead overnight. The fire killed Patricia Finnerty, 41, who was the mother of three and a guidance counselor at Libertyville High School. Also killed in the fire at the family's home was her 11-year-old son, Garrett, a 5th-grader at nearby Westgate Elementary School. Neighbors called 911 when one of the children -- a 12-year-old -- ran to their home for help overnight. Investigators remained at the scene Tuesday afternoon. Arson is suspected due to "burn patterns" found in the home. Friends and neighbors were shocked by the events that played out in the quiet suburb early Tuesday morning.
