Celebrating Fat Tuesday in Chicago is not quite the same as it is in New Orleans, where it is somehow socially acceptable over the course of a few days to whip off your shirt in exchange for some shiny, plastic beads. If you do that here, you are likely to freeze your ta-tas off, let alone get arrested for public indecency. But this doesn't mean we can't have our share of fun during Carnivale.
There's no better place to celebrate the Latin holiday than the restaurant with the same name: Carnivale. The Nuevo-Latino eatery is hosting a three-day extravaganza from Sunday, Feb. 22 through Tuesday, Feb. 24.
Sunday, Feb. 22 features a Family Night complete with face painters, balloon cartoonists, stilt walkers, complimentary masks and beads for kids and live music by Nelson Sosa. There will be a special kids' menu and kids' hurricanes.
On Monday, Feb. 23, indulge in $5 mojitos from around the world (France, Cuba, Mexico and Portugal, to name a few) as Carnivale celebrates Mardi Gras celebrations from all over the planet. Enjoy DJ Monna 3° Monnatone Music, complimentary masks and beads and a red carpet hosted by guest host Bobby Pins.
On Tuesday, Feb. 24, a.k.a. Fat Tuesday, take part in a massive celebration featuring live music by Angel Melendez, samba dancing with dancers from Shirley Vieira of Brasil via Chicago, Bacardi Girls' tableside mojito cart, complimentary masks and beads and a Carnivale-inspired menu created by executive chef Mark Mendez.
