A Mano, the authentic Italian trattoria located under sister restaurant BIN 36 in River North, suffered greatly from January's extreme temperatures, but don't call it a casualty. You can, however, call it a comeback, as owner Dan Sachs decided to carpe diem and bring forth a back-to-basics approach for his 18-month-old eatery. When A Mano triumphantly returns on Wednesday, March 4, you'll find a refocused and recharged menu and atmosphere firmly in place.
The fact that the pipe decided to give way during lunch service, flooding the entire restaurant -- yet no one actually bothered to leave -- is testament to A Mano's loyal clientele. Executive chef John Caputo is rewarding his customers' staying power with a revamped menu featuring rustic Italian favorites that can either be enjoyed in quick, small dishes or as a more leisurely sit-down affair. And, thankfully, A Mano's cherished wood-fired ovens and gelato makers were spared in the flood. Even the gracious wine bar is getting a makeover, with additions to both the beer and cocktail lists, including such playful takes as "The Flood" (Prosecco with a "burst" of citrus) and "The Warped Floor" (Kahlua with a touch of chocolate). How's that for a sense of humor?
