Though Pitchfork TV pulled the trigger on a Chief Keef feature a few months back, the Chicago-based media outlet put the safety back on after a recent controversy.
Pitchfork TV interviewed the 17-year-old South Side rapper at a New York City gun range for a show called "Selector," where rappers are interviewed and freestyle over beats.
That was before Keef landed at the center of more controversy this week when he joked on Twitter about the death of an 18-year-old rival rapper.
Joseph Coleman, aka Lil Jojo, was shot in the back while riding a bike on the 6900 block of South Princeton Avenue in Englewood. Hours later a tweet showed up on Keef's feed, seemingly laughing off the shooting: "Hahahahahahaha… It’s sad cuz ... JoJo wanted to be jus like us #LMAO."
In a Pitchfork post explaining the retraction, editor-in-chief Mark Richardson said the concept was "rushed and never should have happened," and admitted the segment was "insensitive and irresponsible." Richardson also noted Chicago's increased gun violence as another factor in the decision to pull the video.
Police are looking into the war of words between the two rapper's camps in the shooting investigation, and as of Friday, no arrests had been made in the case, the Chicago Tribune reported.
Keef had already enjoyed a level of underground success but burst into the mainstream after Kanye West's label recorded a remix for one of his songs while he was on house arrest at his grandmother's house on a gun-related charge.
Keef claims his Twitter account was hacked and that he never mocked Lil Jojo's death.
