A Happier Happy Hour

New after-work deals get you and your fellow worker bees buzzed for less

You know the drill: Go to happy hour with your friends, head home, get to work the next day and find a handful of change and a taxi receipt in your wallet. How are you going to pay for your latte with that? If you're looking for a more frugal after-work option, check out these new promotions from restaurants and bars that want your early-evening business.

Sophisticated River North hot spot Pops for Champagne is offering 37 percent off of all food items (aside from caviar, that is, you high-rollers) from 3-7PM Monday through Friday. And we're not talking about hot wings and fries. Executive chef Andrew Brochu's constantly evolving menu highlights such savory, champagne-friendly dishes as a trio of foie gras, rabbit rilette and country pate, as well as poached lobster skewers with lobster froth, lemon and minced herb.

Nightly drink specials at Dine draw the Loop office denizens to this retro-style Madison Street restaurant. On Mondays, get half-off of a bottle of wine with the purchase of an entree, Tuesdays offer half-off all draft beer, all mixed drinks are $4 on Wednesdays, Thursdays bring half-off glasses of wine with the purchase of one appetizer and, finally, they bring out the big guns for Fridays: $6 house martinis.

The two locations of Wildfire (River North and west suburban Oak Brook) are featuring half-priced appetizers Monday through Friday in their lively Martini Lounges. Make a meal out of such hearty, shareable starters as grilled chicken-and-portobello mushroom skewers, crab-crusted stuffed shrimp and spinach-and-artichoke fondue. Your work day will only be a bad memory after a feast like that.
