An unfamiliar sport will assail the shores of Lake Michigan this weekend.
Chicago is the international host city for the Beach Polo World Cup on Oct. 1-2.
It's exactly what it sounds like -- the game of polo, complete with horses, played on North Avenue Beach. Four teams will compete in World Cup play, and four women's teams will compete in the North Beach Women's Polo Cup.
Players from all over the country will compete in the tournament, which originated in Miami Beach seven years ago and has been known to attract up to 15,000 spectators.
A custom-built beach arena about the size of a football stadium will be constructed on the beach and bordered by a beachfront bar and grill. The playing area is one-tenth the size of a typical polo field, allowing for a more intimate setting.
The area will also be tricked out with VIP suites, social tents, pop-up shops, plus fashion shows and other presentations will be held throughout the weekend.
General admission tickets are $20 for each day. VIP tickets are $150 for each day or $250 for a two-day VIP pass.
