Big Rig Fire Shuts Down Indiana Tollway

A fire shut down part of the Indiana Tollway Friday morning after the trailer of a big rig caught fire.

The fire happened around 5 a.m. in the westbound lanes, about 1/2 mile west of Calumet Avenue.

It took crews hours to clean up the fire.

Correction:  The fire was not caused by a crash, as reported earlier in this article.  The driver of the big rig said he noticed sparks while driving and one of his tires blew.  He safely pulled over to the side of the road, then called 911 and tried to extinguish the fire.  He detached the tractor from the trailer to prevent the fire from reaching the cab while he waited for firefighters to arrive.
