Bikers May Soon be Able to Run Red Lights

Proposed law would allow motorcyclists, bicyclists to stop and proceed

A bill that would allow Illinois motorcycle rides and bicyclists to forgo red lights after coming to a complete stop is a signature away from becoming law.

The measure was sent to Gov. Pat Quinn on Sunday after it was approved by the Illinois House.

The law would allow riders to proceed through an intersection if the light hasn't changed to green within a reasonable amount of time.

Chicago would be exempt from the law.

Motorcycle groups pushed for the law because the traffic light sensors don't always pick up the lighter weight of two-wheel vehicles.

Several other states such as Wisconsin, North Carolina and Minnesota have similar laws.

It's not clear if Quinn plans to sign the law.
