Performances of the Joffrey Ballet’s holiday classic “The Nutcracker” return to Chicago’s Lyric Opera House Sunday after a breakthrough COVID-19 case within company ranks forced the cancellations of three shows.

A steep rise in coronavirus cases has put a damper on the holiday season in Chicago, forcing the cancellation of sporting events, musicals and holiday-themed events. NBC 5’s Lexi Sutter has the story.

The Joffrey Ballet’s Nutcracker is back.

“A Night at the Ballet,” is a free streaming event that premieres on Thursday. The event, filmed in a small New York theater, will treat ballet-starved fans to dancers from America’s top companies performing excerpts of classical ballets like “Romeo and Juliet, “The Nutcracker” and “Don Quixote.”

With families wondering how they will celebrate the holidays during coronavirus shutdowns, the Hill-Stead Museum and Ballet Theatre Company have partnered to bring The Nutcracker to life with a costume exhibition and ballet performances in a life-sized snow globe.

The coronavirus has hit one part of the arts and entertainment world especially hard, and that’s performances of “The Nutcracker.”
