Michelle Relerford

Michelle Relerford is the Weekday Morning Co-Anchor for NBC 5 News Today.

Michelle was born and raised in Chicago and graduated from Whitney Young High School. She studied Journalism and English at the University of Connecticut. While in college, she interned for NBC Chicago's Investigative Unit. Her first reporting job was at WBOC is Dover, Delaware, followed by WNDU in South Bend, Indiana, then WEWS in Cleveland, Ohio. Later, she anchored weekends and reported for WHDH-TV, the NBC affiliate in Boston where she spent four years.

In September of 2011, Michelle returned home to Chicago as a reporter and fill-in anchor for NBC 5 News. Since joining WMAQ, Michelle has traveled back to Cleveland to report on the discovery of three missing girls found captive in a home after more than a decade. She also traveled to Montgomery, Alabama, to cover former U.S. Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr.’s release from federal prison. 

In 2016, Michelle was promoted to weekend evening anchor alongside the late Dick Johnson. She joined NBC 5 Morning News in August of 2020. The following year, Michelle traveled to Tokyo, Japan, to cover the 2021 Summer Olympics. The assignment was during the global coronavirus pandemic. There she navigated strict quarantine and testing protocols to bring viewers stories of local athletes and national stars pushing past unprecedented obstacles to pursue their dreams. Michelle is now living her dream here in her hometown as a part of the morning show team.

She enjoys giving back to her community by hosting charity events and volunteering as much as possible with two very busy young boys at home!!
