According to the Vatican, Pope Francis' funeral will be held at 10 a.m. 10 a.m. local time, or 3 a.m. CT on Saturday. Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re will preside over the funeral liturgy, officials said. President Donald Trump is expected to attend, the White House said.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated in the churchyard of the St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, the Vatican said. The pontiff’s body will then be taken to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore for burial.

Cardinals from around the world come to Rome for the funeral, but not all do. Following the funeral is a period called the "congregations," where the cardinal electors get together for speeches, NBC's Anne Thompson said.

"While they're all cardinals, they really don't know each other, and they have to get to know each other," Thompson said.

Approximately 15 days later, there will be a conclave, when cardinal electors go into the Sistine Chapel and spend days voting on who will be the next pope.

Wednesday, the coffin containing Francis' body will be taken to St. Peter's Basilica. A procession will pass through Saint Martha's Square, and then into Saint Peter's Square before entering the Basilica, the Vatican said.

Also on Wednesday, a memorial service will take place at 10 a.m. at Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago, at 735 N. State St. Cardinal Blase Cupich, the Archdiocese of Chicago, will lead the Mass before making his way to the Vatican.
