A South Shore woman fell five stories and impaled herself on a fence -- or possibly the upright portion of a ladder -- Tuesday morning, according to police, who are investigating.
Initial reports from a Police News Affairs spokeswoman said the woman struck a fence, but later reports listed the "upright portion of a ladder on the roof of the garage of the apartment building."
The woman was 73-years-old, say police, who were called about 10:50 a.m. to 6900 S. Crandon.
Fire Media Affairs spokesman Quention Curtis said the woman, who was dead on the scene, apparently fell five stories before striking the object that killed her.
The Cook County Medical Examiner's office confirmed a fatality at that address, according to STNGwire reports.
On Wednesday, police ruled the death a suicide.
