White Sox Shut Out by Athletics in South Side Matinee

The Sox managed just four hits on the afternoon

It a matinee affair at Guaranteed Rate Field on Friday afternoon, it was the Oakland A’s who came out on top as they beat the Chicago White Sox 7-0.

Stephen Piscotty and Matt Chapman hit home runs for the visiting Athletics, and Mike Fiers pitched seven innings of shutout baseball as the A’s picked up a series-opening victory.

Chad Pinder also homered for the A’s, and Dustin Garneau drove in a pair of runs in the win.

For the White Sox, Ross Detwiler had a solid outing, giving up a pair of runs in five innings, but Jace Fry coughed up four more runs in the eighth inning, yielding a pair of walks and a pair of hits without recording an out.

Tim Anderson had two hits on the day, but the offense just couldn’t get going after a strong series in Detroit earlier in the week.

James McCann, Matt Skole, and Ryan Cordell all struck out twice in the losing effort, and only Jon Jay was able to avoid fanning during the game.

The A’s got on the board early in the contest, as Chapman homered in the first and Piscotty homered in the second to give Oakland an early 2-0 advantage. Detwiler was able to keep them at bay over the next three innings, but the White Sox couldn’t take advantage as their bats remained silent.

In the eighth inning the A’s blew things open, with Pinder hammering a two-run home run to center field to extend Oakland’s lead. Jurickson Profar drilled an RBI double later in the frame, and Garneau finished off the surge with an RBI double of his own to make it a 7-0 game.

The two clubs will continue their series on Saturday evening, as Reynaldo López will face-off against Illinois native Tanner Roark.
