The United States stayed atop the medal throne at the Tokyo Games, but China has closed the gap after Day 7 of competition.

Team USA leads the 2020 Tokyo Games with 41 overall medals -- 14 gold medals, 16 silver and 11 bronze.

Medal counts for other countries

China, which has 40 medals overall, is in second in the medal count entering Day 8 of the Tokyo Olympics.

The host country, Japan, is in fourth with 28 medals overall but has the second-most gold medals after China.

ROC is third with a total medal count of 34 medals.

Great Britain has taken over fifth place with 24 medals and six golds.

The United States' gold medal count remains unchanged on Day 7. Team USA sits in third in gold medal count, trailing China and Japan, with 14.
