Stint on Disabled List ‘Likely' for Willson Contreras, Maddon Says

Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras has been one of the hottest hitters in all of baseball, but it looks like he’ll be out of commission as the team tries to maintain its division lead.

During Wednesday’s game against the San Francisco Giants, Contreras appeared to injure himself while running to first base. He was immediately removed from the game, and afterward manager Joe Maddon told media that it was “likely” that Contreras will be placed on the disabled list.

According to the Cubs, Contreras will undergo an MRI on the injury Thursday when they arrive in Arizona for a three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Contreras was having a monster second half of the season for the Cubs before the injury, taking home National League Player of the Week honors after slugging five home runs on the team’s recent homestand. The catcher is batting .277 with 21 home runs and 70 RBI this season, and has been one of the few Cubs players hitting the ball well in recent games.
