Stanley Cup fever has hit the nation, all the way up to our politicians. U.S. Reps. Mike Quigley (D- Chicago Blackhawks) and Patrick Murphy (D-Philadelphia Flyers) met on the steps of the Capitol building this morning in preparation for their two teams’ face-off tomorrow night.
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi dropped the puck for the Congressional face-off, trying to keep the peace between the two rivaling congressmen.
“There’s no ‘brotherly love’,” Quigley said. “I don’t know how Mr. Murphy feels about wearing a Hawks jersey on the House floor, but I don’t plan on celebrating this win quietly.”
Wisecracks may have been abound, but Quigley was dead serious in his city’s quest for the cup.
“Diehard Hawks fans have been waiting since 1961 for the Cup to come home to the Windy City,” he said in a statement. “We’re just four wins away.”
Quigley and Murphy are not the only politicians with bets on the line. Mayor Daley and Philadelphia mayor Michael Nutter each bet a smorgasbord of food to be donated to the appropriate winners’ city.
Game One of the Stanley Cup Finals will be Saturday, May 29 at 7 p.m.
