Cease keeps a chokehold on Detroit in record-setting win originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago
In Saturday’s 15-2 beatdown of the Detroit Tigers, White Sox pitcher Dylan Cease became the first pitcher in White Sox history to win his first eight starts against a single opponent.
“Well, the last couple starts against them, I’ve really been locked in,” Cease told reporters after the game. “It’s just one of those things where I’m executing pitches and I bring my A-game, I’m tough to hit.”

Cease only went five innings on Saturday, but they were all he’d need to secure the win thanks to an absolute knockout performance from the offense. The long innings were certainly a factor in the right-hander’s shortened outing.
“The delays in the innings, that really disrupts your timing,” White Sox manager Tony La Russa said after the game. “To have to reheat and get back out there, it wasn’t a day to push him.”
Cease relied on his off-speed stuff to tame the tigers on Saturday, and said his slider, in particular, was his poison of the day.
“There were a couple curveballs that I didn’t throw with quite enough, I guess intensity would be the right word, and they weren’t quite as sharp,” Cease said. “But for the most part, I felt really good with my off-speed especially my slider.”
In his next start, scheduled for June 17, Cease will endure his greatest test of the season against the highest-ranked offense in baseball, the Houston Astros.
