Report: NBA Teams Prepping for Free Agency to Start 48-72 Hours After Draft

Report: Teams prepping for FA to start 48-72 hours after draft originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

The NBA offseason is shaping up to be a whirlwind.

With buzz building around a Dec. 22 start date, and Dec. 1 opening of training camps, some teams are now preparing for free agency to open "48 to 72 hours after" the Nov. 18 draft, Marc Stein of the New York Times reported Tuesday.

Before any of this is final, the league and NBPA will have to agree on a proposal for how and when to carry out the 2020-21 season, and modifications to the current CBA, which are currently scheduled to conclude on Oct. 30 at the latest.

But if what the league is trickling out to the media comes to fruition, teams are going to have to implement key personnel decisions — and acclimate new players — at a breakneck pace this offseason.

The Bulls, for their part, own the No. 4 and 44 overall picks in the NBA Draft, and as a soon-to-be over-the-salary-cap team, will have the mid-level exception (projected to be $9.3 million) and bi-annual exception (projected to be $3.6 million) at their disposal.
