Report: Daniel Theis to Sign With Rockets, Leave Bulls

Report: Daniel Theis to sign with Rockets, leave Bulls originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

Daniel Theis appears on his way to Houston.

The versatile 29-year-old big man, who the Bulls acquired before last March's trade deadline, has agreed to sign a four-year, $36 million deal with the Rockets, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported.

Theis won the hearts of many Chicago faithful during his brief Bulls stint, in which he racked up averages of 10 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.8 assists, starting 14 games after supplanting Lauri Markkanen in the team's front line.

Now, he's on the way out the door. But his departure could aid the Bulls as they continue to round out their roster.

As reported by ESPN's Tim McMahon, the Bulls and Rockets will work a sign-and-trade to get Theis to Houston, generating a trade exception for the Bulls. But if the two sides wanted to get really wonky...

The minutia is complicated but the skinny is that, if the Bulls, Rockets and Lakers agreed to this construction, the Bulls would retain their non-taxpayer mid-level exception, giving them another $9.5 million on top of Caruso to outright sign free agents.

That would be a massive boost, as the roster (while improved) is still lacking on the wing and in the frontcourt.

Stay tuned.
