The Padres have "been in contact" with the Cubs regarding a possible trade for starting pitcher Yu Darvish, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reported on Saturday.

However, Acee adds "signals from team sources have been mixed on how far along those talks are."

Darvish, 34, is coming off a second-place finish in 2020 NL Cy Young Award voting, a season in which he went 8-3 with a 2.01 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in 12 starts. He's been stellar since the 2019 second half, holding a 2.40 ERA and 0.88 WHIP in 25 starts.

San Diego will be without ace Mike Clevinger in 2021 as he recovers from Tommy John surgery. They have one of the game's top farm systems, one that could interest the Cubs in a potential trade. Jed Hoyer and Co. are attempting to thread a needle this winter, retooling with a long-term outlook in mind while remaining competitive in 2021.

But although a Darvish trade could net the Cubs future assets, he's expected to be a big part of their success going forward. The right-hander is under contract through 2023 for $62 million, a good deal considering his recent performance. He also has a partial no-trade clause.

Between Darvish and Kyle Hendricks, the Cubs have one of the better 1-2 starting rotation punches in baseball. Ultimately, as MLB Network's Jon Heyman suggested this week, a trade seems unlikely.
