Giants interested in Cubs free agent starter Jon Lester originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago
The Giants were interested in Jon Lester six years ago as a free agent and appear to be again, according to MLB.com's Jon Morosi.
San Francisco made an aggressive run at Lester in free agency during the 2014-15 offseason and were a finalist for him. The Giants offered him more total money (with a seventh year) but he ultimately signed a six-year, $155 million deal with the Cubs.
The Giants, whose general manager is former Cubs executive Scott Harris, play in pitcher-friendly Oracle Park, which is especially tough on left-handed hitters.
Lester, 37 in January, hit the open market last month when the Cubs bought out the final year on his contract for $10 million. He and the Cubs have mutual interest in a reunion, and Lester discussed his free agency with former team president Theo Epstein in October.
“I’ve definitely appreciated everything that this organization has done for me, and I hope it’s not it,” Lester said of his future in October. “I hope we can figure something out for next year, and these conversations are kind of null and void.”
