MLB Free Agency: Mets Sign Former Cubs Outfielder José Martínez

José Martínez signs with Mets, ending brief Cubs tenure originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

José Martínez' brief time on the North Side officially is over.

The Mets announced Thursday they've signed the outfielder/DH to a one-year deal. According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, it's a split contract worth $1 million with incentives if he's on the big league roster.

The Cubs acquired Martínez from the Rays ahead of the 2020 trade deadline due to his track record for hitting left-handed pitching well. However, the 32-year-old struggled in limited action, going 0-for-21 in 10 games, and the Cubs optioned him to their alternate site roster twice in September.

In exchange for Martínez, the Cubs sent Tampa Bay 19-year-old infield prospect Pedro Martinez and cash.
