Angels sign former Cubs starter José Quintana originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago
Four-fifths of the 2020 starting rotation the Cubs were projected to break camp with prior to MLB's COVID-19 shutdown officially won't be back in 2021.
Left-hander José Quintana has agreed to a deal with the Angels, The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal reported Tuesday.
The deal, which is pending a physical, reunites Quintana with former Cubs manager Joe Maddon. It's worth $8 million, according to Yahoo! Sports' Tim Brown.
The Cubs acquired Quintana in a memorable 2017 trade with the crosstown White Sox, sending top prospects Eloy Jimenez and Dylan Cease to the South Side. His arrival helped push the Cubs to a third straight postseason berth and second consecutive division title after a 43-45 first half World Series hangover.
In 14 starts post-trade that season, Quintana went 7-3 with a 3.74 ERA. He wasn't the same pitcher as he was with the White Sox (4.24 ERA with Cubs, 3.51 with Sox) but was extremely durable, making 30+ starts in both 2018 and '19.
Quintana started the shortened 2020 season on the injured list after sustaining a thumb injury washing dishes. He returned in late August, only to land back on the shelf with left lat inflammation.
Quintana follows starters Yu Darvish (traded to Padres), Jon Lester (signed with Nationals), and Tyler Chatwood (signed with Blue Jays) to leave the Cubs this winter.
