Lovie Smith First Man Alex Brown Would Interview If Bears Fire Matt Nagy

Why Alex Brown thinks Lovie Smith should top possible coach search originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

Despite the Bears’ impressive showing on Sunday, it may not be enough for Matt Nagy to keep his job at season’s end. If the Bears play poorly down the stretch, they may be looking for their fourth new head coach since firing Lovie Smith after the 2012 season. But with Smith out as Illinois’ head coach, should the team go back to the man that led them to their last conference championship? On The Football Aftershow, Alex Brown said Smith would be at the top of his list.

“He’d be my first call,” Brown said.

To that, host David Kaplan said he thought Bears fans wouldn’t be happy with the decision to rehash the past.

“They don’t like winning huh?” Brown said. “They don’t want winning?... He went to two NFC championship games, that’s what he went to.”

Lance Briggs joined in to praise his former coach as well.

“Every one of those years that I played for the Bears, except for maybe my rookie year, and even that year,  just mentality-wise was a year where I felt we could make it to the playoffs, was a team that we could make it to the playoffs with. You know, how far we went I don’t know. Each one of those years we were fighting for a playoff spot. Whether we got in or we didn’t, whatever happened, we were fighting for a playoff spot. That’s more than a lot of teams in the NFL can say every year.”

Olin Kreutz agreed, but joked that he and his colleagues may be just a smidgen biased given their relationship with Smith.

“Everybody knows the amount of respect we all have for Lovie, we think he is a great coach,” Kreutz said. “His last few years, you know, I was looking at Lance, that 2012 season when you guys were 10-6, you guys were plus-20 in turnover differential. I mean that is an insane number. I mean we’re biased. What we think about this man will never change.”

Smith coached the Bears from 2004-2012, leading the team to an 81-63 record during his tenure. As Brown said, the Bears earned two NFC Championship berths with Smith, winning once.
