Cubs' Tom Ricketts: Jed Hoyer Made ‘Tough,' ‘Necessary' Decisions

Tom Ricketts: Hoyer made ‘tough,’ ‘necessary’ decisions originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

A few hours after the Cubs had finished trading away their championship core, chairman Tom Ricketts put out a statement.

“I want to personally thank Anthony Rizzo, Javy Báez and Kris Bryant. Together they played critical roles for one of the most successful runs in Chicago Cubs history. They each secured a place in the hearts of Cubs fans everywhere. While their days taking the field together as Cubs have come to an end, they gave us memories we will hold forever.

“I also wish to acknowledge Jed (Hoyer, Cubs president of baseball operations) and his team for making the tough decisions necessary to build the next great Cubs team.”

Between the end of the Cubs’ 7-4 loss to the Reds on Thursday and the 3 p.m. CT trade deadline the next day, the Cubs traded Rizzo to the Yankees, Báez to the Mets and Bryant to the Giants.

Those three were far from the only deals the Cubs made in the past couple weeks, as the club went on a trading spree for mostly a haul of prospects – plus infielder Nick Madrigal and pitcher Codi Heuer from the White Sox.

The rapid-fire farewells to Rizzo, Báez and Bryant, however, slammed the door shut on an era.
