Cubs Place Ian Happ (Ribs) on 10-Day IL, DFA Kyle Ryan

Happ lands on IL 5 days after collision with Hoerner originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

Nearly a week after his collision with teammate Nico Hoerner, Ian Happ landed on the 10-day injured list Friday with rib bruising, retroactive to May 4, the Cubs announced.

“It’s just not progressing as quick as we wanted it to,” Happ said of the injury.

"I thought that it would start to clear up quicker."

Happ and Hoerner collided chasing after a shallow pop fly in center field last Sunday against Cincinnati. The Cubs center fielder was carted off, and while Hoerner stayed in the game, he hit the 10-day IL Tuesday with a left forearm strain.

Happ later cleared concussion testing and took batting practice Friday but said the injury is affecting his running and throwing.

“You don’t realize how much you use your core, your rib cage until you can’t,” he said.

Happ said the last thing he and the Cubs wanted was to force his way through the injury, compensating with other areas of his body and possibly risking additional injury. He’s going to take a few days off from throwing and hitting to rest.

“I’ve been doing a lot of body posture work, a lot of that extra stuff that isn't kind of our baseball movements but it's kind of keeping the body in a good spot and working through that,” he said.

Happ added he hopes to start hitting at the end of the weekend or early next week but is taking things day-to-day. He’s eligible to come off the IL next Friday, when the Cubs open a three-game series in Detroit.

“Hopefully the body starts to recover pretty quick and hopefully I feel better before that mark,” he said.

In a corresponding move, the Cubs recalled outfielder Nick Martini from Triple-A. The club designated lefty reliever Kyle Ryan for assignment while recalling right-hander Jason Adam from Iowa.
