Cubs' Nico Hoerner Could Return as Soon as This Weekend

Cubs’ Nico Hoerner could return as soon as this weekend originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

MILWAUKEE – Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner, on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa, could return from the injured list as soon as this weekend.

“The more and more guys go down,” Cubs manager David Ross said before the Cubs’ series finale against the Brewers on Wednesday, “the more and more it’s a possibility.”

Hoerner, who has been out with a strained left hamstring for five weeks, made rehab appearances on Sunday and Tuesday.

“All good signs,” Ross said Wednesday. “He's off today, play tomorrow, and then we'll see where he's at.”

The Cubs’ depth thinned even more on Wednesday. They placed backup catcher Jose Lobaton (right shoulder sprain) on the 60-day IL and called up rookie Taylor Gushue. With Kris Bryant (right side soreness) and Anthony Rizzo (back tightness) already out of the lineup, Patrick Wisdom left Wednesday’s game after a second-inning collision.
