Cubs' Jed Hoyer Expects to Hire Outside Candidate as General Manager

Hoyer expects to hire outside candidate as next Cubs GM originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

Jed Hoyer expects to hire someone from outside the Cubs organization to fill his old job as general manger, the new president of baseball operations announced Monday.

Hoyer, who agreed to a new five-year contract along with his promotion, did not put a timeline on his GM search. He cited a need for patience in identifying “the right person at the right time.”

Said Hoyer: “I want the fresh ideas, and I want to be challenged. I think that that's part of the beauty of going outside the organization. So, I encourage that.”

Hoyer also wants to recreate some of what made him and Theo Epstein a dynamic team. Epstein resigned as president of baseball operations last week, after nine years with the Cubs.

The pair designed their offices to face each other across a small sitting room so they could talk without leaving their desks.

“The most important thing I'm going to be trying to find is a sense of trust,” Epstein said of the GM search. “That's probably the part of the relationship with Theo that I value on top of everything else, is that these are high pressure jobs, and you make a lot of tough decisions, and things are going to go wrong. And I think you have to know that, that person is with you 100 percent and that there's no dividing the two of you.”

Hoyer pointed to his and Epstein’s policy of not publicly divulging who pushed for which trades, or who took the lead on which decisions.

“To me that's critically important in these roles,” Hoyer said. “I want all of the input I can possibly get, and I want differing opinions. But ultimately when we go forward, we have to go forward as one. And trying to find that characteristic in someone that I feel like I can really trust and is really in this for the right reasons, I think that's essential.”

Though Hoyer said he expects to hire his general manager from outside the organization, other internal promotions are expected this week.
