Cubs' Jake Arrieta (Hamstring) Won't Come Off IL Saturday

Starting pitcher Jake Arrieta will not come off the 10-day injured list Saturday, the first day he's eligible, Cubs manager David Ross said Friday.

Arrieta went on the 10-day injured list with right hamstring tightness July 7.

"He’s working on some stuff in the bullpen," Ross said. "Get him some confidence going into that, make sure the hamstring is good, and then get him off and let him compete and make sure he can execute the things he’s trying to do in real competition."

Ross said last week Arrieta had been dealing with the hamstring since late May. The 35-year-old has struggled over the last two months, sporting an 8.55 ERA over his last 12 starts.

He's lasted 1 2/3 innings in each of his last two outings, allowing seven earned runs July 6, his last start before going on the IL.

The Cubs opted to give him a chance to regroup physically and mentally before the All-Star break. Trevor Williams started in Arrieta's place last Sunday.
