Cubs Injury: Anthony Rizzo Takes Batting Practice, Ground Balls

Ross: Cubs ‘on the verge of getting some guys healthy’ originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo took ground balls and batting practice on Monday, his sixth straight day out of the lineup.

Before the Chicago Cubs faced the San Diego Padres at Wrigley Field on Monday, Rizzo (lower back tightness) set up at first base for fielding drills. Outfielders Jason Heyward and Jake Marisnick (hamstring strains), took batting practice at the same time. They had run earlier in the day.

“We’re on the verge of getting some guys healthy,” Cubs manager David Ross said. “Which is the good news on the back end of some bad news.”

The bad news was starting pitcher Trevor Williams landing on the 10-day IL after undergoing an appendectomy Sunday. The Cubs backdated the IL move to Friday and recalled right-hander Kohl Stewart from Triple-A Iowa to start for the Cubs on Monday.

“You want to cry uncle sometimes,” Ross said, “but it is what we’re dealing with and guys have done a nice job coming up and helping us win ballgames.”

Including Williams, the Cubs have 12 players on the IL. Heyward and Marisnick are eligible to return from the IL whenever the medical staff clears them to do so. Rizzo so far has avoided the IL.

Asked if Rizzo would return to the lineup Tuesday, Ross said he didn’t know.

Then, with a wry smile he added: “I hope so.”
