Dorey takes on new role as Hoyer reshuffles FO staff originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago
The Cubs announced dozens of promotions and strategic shifts of front office personnel Tuesday, including the move of farm director Matt Dorey into the more evaluation-focused role of vice president of player personnel.
Dorey, who remains in team president Jed Hoyer’s inner circle in the new role, spent the past two seasons running the minor-league system after nine years with the organization in scouting roles that included six years as amateur scouting director.
His two years as farm director might have been the most challenging for those in that job in major-league history, with the pandemic wiping out the 2020 season and altering the 2021 season and with major structural changes to the minor leagues and their relationships to MLB.

“Both last season with the alt site and this year with a delayed spring training and all of the issues COVID presented minor-league baseball, Matt has handled every challenge with great leadership and remarkable humanity,” Hoyer said as the 2021 season concluded.
“It’s hard to imagine anyone handling a delicate and exhausting situation better than Matt has these past 18 months,” Hoyer said.
Jared Banner, a former Mets player development executive who joined the Cubs a year ago, takes over much of Dorey’s former role as vice president, player development. He spent the past season as a VP of special projects.
Also moving up is longtime baseball operations maven and scouting exec Andrew Bassett, who was named pro scouting director and special assistant to Hoyer and general manager Carter Hawkins.
