Higgins, 28, hit well with Iowa to start the season, batting .333/.458/.513 (13-for-39) in 11 games. With Austin Romine injured in spring training, he was in the mix for a spot on the Opening Day roster, before the Cubs signed Wolters in late March.
Wolters, 28, appeared in 14 games across two stints with the Cubs this season. They DFA'd him on April 14, eventually bringing him back to the big leagues a few weeks later, when Romine went on the injured list with a wrist injury.
Wolters slashed .125/.276/.125 with the Cubs, but they have raved about his game-calling behind the plate.
