Cubs Call Up Greg Deichmann, Jason Heyward Lands on IL

Cubs call up OF prospect acquired for Chafin originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

The Cubs called up outfield prospect Greg Deichmann from Triple-A Iowa before Friday’s series opener against the White Sox.

In a corresponding move, the club placed Jason Heyward on the 10-day IL with left index finger inflammation.

Deichmann joined the Cubs organization in last month’s trade with Oakland for reliever Andrew Chafin. The 26-year-old was the A’s second round pick out of LSU in 2017 and Oakland’s No. 9 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, at the time of the trade.

Deichmann made his MLB debut Friday, hitting fifth and playing right field. Before the promotion, he was hitting .291/.425/.439 in 67 Triple-A games this season.

He has experience at all three outfield spots in the minors but has spent the most time in right.

“I’ve heard great things,” Cubs manager David Ross said. “He's having a great year and was nice pick up for us.

“I’m excited to see him in a Cubs uniform and get his feet wet a little bit. [He has] quality at-bats, seems to control the strike zone really well, uses all fields.”

Deichmann is the second player the Cubs acquired in their deadline selloff to join the big-league roster, following reliever Codi Heuer.

Ross said Heyward has been dealing with the finger injury for a while. He reaggravated it during batting practice this week against the Rockies.
